Waynad Heritage Museum at Ambalavayal

The Wayanad Heritage Museum, under the District Tourism Promotion Council, at Ambalavayal has a rare and exquisite collection dating back to the 16th century.The exhibits collected from various parts of the district are showcased in four blocks — Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi.Veerasmruthi contains different types of stones locally called ‘veerakkallu.’ These depict tiger hunt and primitive wars between the 14th and 16th century. In those days, ‘veerakkallu’ were erected on the tombs of warriors to commemorate their heroic deeds, as in a war or attempts to kill wild animals, especially tigers.The Gothrasmruthi block showcases articles associated with tribal life. These include plough, fish-collecting bags, cowbells, etc.
Devasmruthi is a treasure house for scholars and students, as the artefacts here belong from the Neolithic age to the 17th century. Terracotta figurines collected from a recent excavation at Kuppakolly, near the Edakkal caves, have also been put on display here. In addition to this, nearly 20 stone idols dating back to the 12th century to 16th century have been showcased here.
Jeevanasmruthi, as the name suggests, has various types of hunting traps, bangles, necklaces and musical instruments used by the tribal people in Wayanad. A writing stone, Neolithic celts found in the district are also displayed.
