The Wayanad Heritage Museum, under the District Tourism Promotion Council, at Ambalavayal has a rare and exquisite collection dating back to the 16th century. The exhibits collected from various parts of the district are showcased in four blocks — Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi. Veerasmruthi contains different types of stones locally called ‘veerakkallu.’ These depict tiger hunt and primitive wars between the 14th and 16th century. In those days, ‘veerakkallu’ were erected on the tombs of warriors to commemorate their heroic deeds, as in a war or attempts to kill wild animals, especially tigers. The Gothrasmruthi block showcases articles associated with tribal life. Wayanad Environment Wayanad is situated in the northeastern part of Kerala between 700 to 2100 meters mean sea level and at the southern end of the Deccan plateau. It is set aloft on the majestic Western Ghats. The most part of this district is encircled by forests. The mean average rainfall in this district is 2322 mm.
