The Wayanad Heritage Museum, under the District Tourism Promotion Council, at Ambalavayal has a rare and exquisite collection dating back to the 16th century. The exhibits collected from various parts of the district are showcased in four blocks — Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi. Veerasmruthi contains different types of stones locally called ‘veerakkallu.’ These depict tiger hunt and primitive wars between the 14th and 16th century. In those days, ‘veerakkallu’ were erected on the tombs of warriors to commemorate their heroic deeds, as in a war or attempts to kill wild animals, especially tigers. The Gothrasmruthi block showcases articles associated with tribal life.
